This needs no introduction, so let’s jump in.
1988 Suzuki Jimny Turbo - $7,900
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
What a fantastic machine! It has a few areas of wear and tear and most imports have less than this one’s 76,000 miles, but a NP as far as I’m concerned. THOSE GRAPHICS!
Some actually good photography is refreshing, as is such a wonderful vehicle. I love the yellow fog lights.
Update: Flavien actually sold this one himself to ATL-JDM.
1991 Daihatsu Atrai - $4,500
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This is a good price. Kei vans and trucks usually cannot be found at this price in this condition. Vans in this condition seem to hover around $6,500 so I say NP all day long. 45,000 miles is pretty good too. That’s right about how many miels these usually have when they are imported so it hasn’t been here too long.
Also, these are pretty uncommon. Most Kei cars I see are Honda Actys and their derivatives. Few Diahatsus but the parts supply shouldn’t be too terrible.
Against all odds, Flavien actually sold this one too.
1994 Honda Acty 4x4 - $5,750
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Aside from some very stained upholstery, the truck is near perfect. How did all that butt sweat accumulate and yet the bed is nearly perfect? How do you get the seats so dirty in 39,000 miles? I don’t get it.
A few seat covers later, that is a perfectly functional and unique vehicle.
Update: Against all odds, I’m fairly sure I saw this Acty myself a few weeks ago.
So, which would you be driving home in? I love the Jimney but the Diahatsu is pretty tempting. Are there any tempting JDM imports near you? Show me what you got.

Someone near me is selling this Honda Street G for $6500 .
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/124436375407868/
Also, further away, but still fairly close. $5400 seems like a good price for an Alto Works.

Oh man what a bummer someone ran into it.

I NEED that Jimny

![]() 06/26/2020 at 20:39 |

I would have the Acty. Almost as capable as the Jimny just without the fragile kei class turbo engine.

I really need to create a fake Facebook account to regain access to M arketplace.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 20:45 |

I really want a Kei Truck...they seem like fun little things that would be genuinely practical!
BUT THAT JIMNY THO.....that’s awesome! That being said, I think I like the generation of Jimny AFTER that one a bit more
, but that one is awesome!

Oh that hurts to see
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:06 |

If you are planning on using it on the road, instead of just around your estate or something, do not go for a 4WD version, no matter how tempting it may be. RWD vs 4WD on kei trucks is the difference between very slow, but still manageable in the right lane and so slow you are going to become a new hood ornament for someone’s crossover blob.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:08 |

Yes! It is just such an honest little 4x4 with some seriously good looks. Those fog lights are perfect. I wouldn't change a thing!

I don't have an account. Huh?
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:10 |

Probably true. That must be a world record for miles driven vs butt sweat deposited. Don't drive in the nude without AC on a hot day I guess.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:10 |

We all "need" that Jimny, but I "needed" it first. Dibs.

None for sale on Craigslist or FB Marketplace within a few hundred miles. This is just what I noticed.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:11 |

One of each would be my first choice, and then probably the Acty once I was forced to choose..
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:12 |

But it also comes with pure concentrated butt sweat. Get some seat covers first and I'd agree with you.

Wow, now that's something!
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:13 |

How can you not see that? Bummer.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:15 |

I’m tempted, but transverse FWD cars scare me for some reason. Its a mental hangup, I look under the hood at the crowded little engine bay and want to curl up in a ball and hope it goes away.
I’m sure I could figure stuff out, like I have for the other cars I’ve owned, but they just kind of intimidate me a little. Plus the parts support and language barrier issues.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:18 |
|
Can you go to gearhead therapy for that? Maybe start by looking at pictures and then work your way to an oil change? It kind of depends on the engine bay. I4s aren’t too bad most of the time. I’ve seen some real crowded longitudinal engine bays too.
If you are going to get a JDM import and are intimidated by the parts/language barrier, a Honda Acty is the best case scenario. Familiar brand and crossover parts, used in some US fleets so larger parts and info out there.

I’m the one who exported the Jimny for ATL-JDM :)
Hit me up if you want to buy it, I can definitely get you a good deal!
Here’s the video of it when it was still in Japan
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:24 |
|
Now that I think of it, that Atrai is probably one I exported too lol
It also went to ATL-JDM back then and they did lots of cosmetic work on it.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:24 |
|
Yeah, I know, its just so different/unfamiliar looking, I have a crippling fear that I’ll get far into something, and end up getting stuck, with no documentation in English to consult or anyone local to go seek advice from, and wind up with a part disassembled miniature vehicle in my garage I can’t get back together, either because it exceeds my mechanical aptitude or needs some obscure little part I can’t track down online.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:33 |

I didn’t anticipate it’d be useful without one, pleasantly surprised to see FB doesn’t block it off . You can’t contact a seller, though .
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:33 |
|
Dang, I want one of those. They’re so cool
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:33 |
|
Odd, Flavien from Amagasaki Motors recommends the 4
WD versions because apparently the RWD ones have ungodly bad traction in even the slightest wet because of how light the trucks are!
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:34 |
|
It even has the off-road gauges! Inclinometer, and such!
![]() 06/26/2020 at 21:53 |
|
Well, he would certainly know, but I suppose its down to how you plan to use it. The way the 4WD ones are geared, I doubt you could cruise at anything over 55mph or so, the 2WD ones can handle between 60-65, and maybe touch 75+ for brief periods. The 4 wheel drive ones are fine for around town, but can’t even dream of going on the highway. Even the 2WDs are pushing it there, but at least its in the realm of possibility.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 22:07 |
|
Hahaha! To think they ended up so close to me! The Atrai was being sold as a private sale so the owner must have bought it from ATL JDM. I should check them out.
You must export a lot of cars. Funny that two of them are featured here.
I am fairly sure I saw that exact butt sweat soaked Acty on the road a few days ago. I think you would remember those disgusting seats. How does that happen when the rest of the car is so good?
![]() 06/26/2020 at 22:09 |
|
I just saw that Flavian imported the Jimney AND the Atrai.
I actually saw what must have been that exact same butt sweat soaked Acty on the road last week. No wonder that poor guy looked so miserable. Someone get that thing some chlorox.

Insurance against a bad decision. Like a closed candy store with a large window display. No harm in looking.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 22:11 |

Those Honda and Toyota engines are like Legos. The 3 pots have less in common but most routine problem solving shouldn’t be too impossible.
Have you never worked on a transverse engined car?
![]() 06/26/2020 at 22:20 |
|
No, never owned one. I’ve had a long string of very conventionally engineered vehicles, never strayed out of a narrow comfort zone. Did put down a deposit on a Pao right before COVID hit, but it may be for the best I let that deal slip.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 22:28 |

Variety is fun. You might be pleasantly surprised.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 23:01 |

I think you’ll find there’s no such thing as Japanese butt sweat whereas dirty overalls are universal...
![]() 06/26/2020 at 23:08 |
|
I just question why at no time did the seller in Japan or the US scrub a dub dub that dirt out. There's now way anyone tried and it still looks like that.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 23:14 |
|
That’s easy. The time spent on properly Svending those seats would never be financially recovered and multiplied in a better asking price...better to take the hit as it is and leave it to the buyer.
![]() 06/26/2020 at 23:52 |
|
That Acty doesn’t come from them.... I work directly with Atl-JDM and 100% of their cars comes from me though :)
As for keitrucks it’s common. They are barely driven in term of distances but have hard lives here. I’ve seen destroyed 25yo trucks with 15000km on the clock.
![]() 06/27/2020 at 00:43 |
|
I guess when you are just going small distances in cities you can wear out a truck without putting kilometers on it.
I’ve seen 150,000 mile vehicles that look brand new but highway miles are a prerequisite for that. When everything is so spread out you have to go a lot further between backing into poles and spilling crap in the interior.
The thing I wonder about this one is that the exterior, including the bed, has almost no blemishes at all. It is only a stained interior. Huh.
But I am about 80% sure I saw that exact one. I wonder where it came from then.
![]() 06/27/2020 at 00:46 |
|
Maybe. Even a damp tag could have taken out some of the smudges on the plastic though. I suppose they intend to sell them to a fleet where that doesn't matter as much.
![]() 06/27/2020 at 00:50 |
|
I... don’t think those are sweat stains. That said, I am not devoting any more thought to that subject and I’ll just say the Jimny looks marvelous.
![]() 06/27/2020 at 00:59 |
|
Turns out Flavien imported the Jimney and the Atrai but he has no word on where the Honda was purchased.
I actually am pretty sure I saw the Acty in person and I was struck by just how MISERABLE the driver looked. It was 95° and probably no AC and a hill start incoming but I still think sitting in that seat may have been the cause. He sure didn't seem happy about my friendly wave. Sitting in imported butt residue will do that to even the best of us.
![]() 06/27/2020 at 11:30 |
|
Are they that slow? I know they’re not fast, but I’ve been told that 4WD or not, most can at least handle 60 fairly easily...?
![]() 06/27/2020 at 11:32 |
|
Wait, Flavian imported the exact ones you linked? Usually he has them on his Youtube channel but I don’t remember seeing them there?
![]() 06/27/2020 at 13:44 |
|
https://oppositelock.kinja.com/1844184888
Yes, the exact ones except the Acty, which I saw in person by coincidence. What a coincidence that was. He embedded the videos in that link or you can just scroll down a little. I thought that the whole thing was unlikely enough to start laughing out loud.
![]() 06/27/2020 at 13:56 |

Ooo, I missed these posts, cool! Your handiwork is always recognized Flavien! :P
![]() 06/27/2020 at 13:57 |

Haha, wow! I missed his comments on it (sorry Flavien!)
Amusing to think they came from the other side of the world and are randomly near you! :P
![]() 06/27/2020 at 14:48 |
|
My understanding is that they can go faster than that, but it isn’t healthy, too rough on the engines. They are high revving to start with, but there is a limit. The 4x4s are geared for city and off road driving, they really aren’t intended for highway cruising. Japan’s national speed limit is 62mph, and speed limits tend to be respected there generally. They can do that for a short run, exit to exit, but trying to do a more normal 300-400 mile trip is not a good idea.

Owning an 4WD Acty is on my car list for sure and that price is actually pretty darn good.
![]() 06/27/2020 at 15:53 |
|
Yes! And you could probably get those worn out excuses for seats redone with new foam at an upholstery shop for fairly cheap.
I am fairly sure I saw this same Acty in person and the body was c l e a n. Like it had never been used for actual work but just to putter around the countryside in. Much higher miles than usual but I just think that makes a good deal.
Like I said in the article, these are rarely this nice below $7,500 or so. A good price indeed!
![]() 06/27/2020 at 16:15 |

Ugh I almost bought one for $1,800 one. Not clean, but I mean... $1,800. I was 2nd in line and the first guy bought it :-(

Few of the Kei class vehicles are rapid though some do accelerate like a frightened cat. The small engines and often low gearing tend to make for loud and comparatively low cruising speeds.
Export versions of the same vehicles (like those that came to Australia) typically had larger engines and better gearing. Our Jimny have always had 1.3 litre engines for example. At worst, you could find a 900 cc engine in a export Kei...I recall driving a Diahatsu Mira with an auto box and a sub 1 litre engine and it did fine on the freeway but was a hoot in the suburbs...
![]() 06/27/2020 at 20:22 |

![]() 06/27/2020 at 22:21 |

They made a non-export
version of the Jimny with a larger engine, actually....there was a version in Japan called the Jimny wide that had like...a 1.3L
or 1.5L engine or some such?
I’ve thought Italy would actually be a good place to get a ‘kei van’ actually....the Piaggio Porter was/is essentially an Italian-produced Daihatsu Hijet with different fascia and different engines! PLUS, LHD!
![]() 06/28/2020 at 00:13 |
|
The wide version was/is identical to the export version.
Same situation exists today as a matter of fact. The current Jimny comes in both a Kei version and the export version. Only difference between the two is the driveline, axles and flares. Naturally, we only see the export version...
![]() 06/28/2020 at 07:16 |
|
I thought the F6A and K6A in a lot of Suzukis from that era were some of the most reliable Kei engines you could get, actually?
![]() 06/28/2020 at 07:16 |
|
We never got the Jimny over here in Canadialand....I wish we did, would make a great year-round DD and it’s like....one of the only SUVs I would ever actually really want.
Didn’t they just kill of the Jimny in Europe already because it won’t meet upcoming emissions regs?
![]() 06/28/2020 at 07:16 |

If you browse a lot of kei trucks / van son GooNet or another site, there are a LOT with stained seats like that...they often give them a very basic cleaning, but
I think a big part of it is that the fabric they use in them is likely pretty cheap quality as the kei trucks and vans intended for commercial use are designed to be pretty disposable :(
![]() 06/28/2020 at 09:33 |
|
Kei pickups are quite popular as farm vehicles in Japan. The traveling distances might be short but farm workers can get quite dirty.
![]() 06/28/2020 at 10:29 |
|
I suppose the truck just was very dirty and the upholstery wasn't cleaned. However, only the nice ones get imported.
![]() 06/28/2020 at 18:22 |
|
They probably were in the correct Kei context...outside the Japanese suburbs is not the correct context.
![]() 06/28/2020 at 18:34 |

Suzuki may well have. The new export version has much the same driveline as the previous one...and the low volumes don’t really enable the engineering required to develop substantial improvements or alternatives.
However, if India demanded low emission drivelines then Suzuki would certainly be in a position to act given that Maruti Suzuki has half of the passenger car market share in India and Suzuki owns more than half of the business.
![]() 06/28/2020 at 20:59 |
|
That is true...they could develop a more eco-friendly version if India decreed it....forgot about the Maruti-Suzuki connection...
